While sometimes, it claims that books are biographies when they use invented dialogue, it does give you some guidance. It is Rathbone’s stern, clever, driven Holmes and Bruce’s blundering, comical Watson that most audiences today “see” when they read the original Holmes stories, despite the fact that only one entry in the Rathbone series was actually based on a Doyle story. Again, the history is impeccable and Bennetts is an articulate and engaging writer, obviously steeped in the literary canon but conveying his knowledge with a nice light touch.
